Jamie Grace
A few years back, we attended a concert called Joyful Noise. It’s a massive gathering of Christian bands. We had been attending annually, and we were SO excited to see Jamie Grace there one year. Sarah had met her when she was in the middle of chemotherapy, and she made a huge impact on our lives.
Jamie was pretty young then, maybe 19? I always like encouraging people, so I told Jamie how God had used her to get Sarah through her radiation. She responded and said that we were her inspiration. She was such a beautiful person, and I admired her.
We went about life, and some time passed. Eventually we started homeschooling. Sarah and I were working on a lesson one day when I got a message from my niece Krista. Jamie had released a new song, and Krista wondered if the song was about Sarah. The third verse of Fighter is about an 8 year old girl going through chemo, and yes, it was about Sarah. The bridge of the song contained parts of the conversion that I had with Jamie. That was the end of school that day, we were SO excited!
Then time passed again, and we went to another Joyful Noise concert. Jamie was in the lineup, and we got our place right next to the stage. As we waited for Jamie to take the stage I slipped a yellow post it note to a manager and asked if he would give it to Jamie. I had no idea if she would get the note.
We chatted with the people around us near the stage and told them our story of meeting her previously. Then Jamie was on! She sang a few songs, and then told the crowd about meeting us a few years back. She said she had written a song about Sarah that we didn’t know about…. I thought immediately, of course I knew about her song Fighter. But she was talking about a completely different song. Sarah’s song. Sarah was on my shoulders and my older daughter Savannah was next to me. I was filming all of this which I’m posting on both Facebook and Instagram today. When Jamie said she didn’t know where we were in the crowd, the people around us who I had just shared our story with started cheering and pointing to us. Then the camera crew found us, zoomed in, and put us up on Jumbotron (those massive screens at concerts).
Savannah and I were both sobbing, up on screen for everyone to see. So many people told us they saw us that hot summer day.
Then later in the set Jamie performed the song Fighter. I’ll have to dig out that video one day.
I hear Jamie is making lullabies now, so she has music for all ages! Check her out.
