Goat Kids

We were still recovering from our move to the new farm last fall, so we were slow in purchasing our buck. Typically goats kid (the term for giving birth to goat kids) in February, so we are very behind here. I don’t know if we’ll ever have goats kidding in May / June again, but we have enjoyed the experience in warmer weather. There’s been no concern about the kids being too cold!

So we prepared for the kidding season recently. We have two cameras that we place in the barn, and the monitor was setup in a bedroom on the barn side of our house for reception reasons. Sarah was so excited that she wanted to sleep in the barn, but I talked her into the comforts of the bedroom instead. Then we waited.

We also were preparing for our first day at the Maple Grove Farmers Market, and I went out to the barn to fill my sand bags to weight down our canopy. I was reading an electronic book on my phone as I filled sand into the 4 bags when I heard baby goat sounds. At first I dismissed the sound, there had been no signs of any of the goats in labor, or so I thought. But then there it was again, a baby goat sound. I walked over to the goat stall to find two completely dry goat kids! They had been birthed much earlier in the day. We missed the entire thing! Tutti was our first Mama this spring to deliver beautiful goat kids. She had a boy and a girl.

So the milking season has begun!
